Midi Songs of W. D. Amaradeva
Wannakuwatta Mitiwaduge Don Albert Perera (born 5 December 1927) in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka better known by his adopted name Amaradeva, is a Sri Lankan vocalist and musical composer. Primarily using traditional instruments like sitars, tablas and harmoniums, Amaradeva incorporates Sinhala folk music with Indian ragas in his work.
In the mid-1950s, Amaradeva in his Janagayana project consulted experts of the Kandyan dance tradition like Pani Bharata, Kiriganita, Gunamala, Ukkuva and Suramba in his path to understand what constituted Sinhala folk music. Noting that it mostly revolved around a single melody, he decided to add verses that would lead up to the central melody which would now be a chorus thus forming two parts (unseen earlier in traditional Sri Lankan music) removing restrictions that had existed earlier. In doing so, Amaradeva created a uniquely Sinhalese music style that stayed true to folk tradition while incorporating outside influences. His work was vital in the creation of the sarala gee genre practiced subsequently by artists like Victor Ratnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe and Sanath Nandasiri.

The band was formed in 1969 by Anton Perera, a confectioner at the Glucorasa company, composed of his five sons (Sunil, Nihal, Piyal, Nimal, Lal) - all of whom had recently completed high school. Lead singer Sunil Perera, schooled at St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and St Peter's College, Colombo. Anton renovated a portion of his house on Galle Road (in Ratmalana) into a recording studio and began recording their first album. In the thirty years that followed, many changes have occurred in the group's membership that have led to the eight members present today. Sunil Perera and Piyal Perera are the two surviving members from the original line up.
Their early success was due to a series of 5 LPs they released in the 1970s (entitled Dance With the Gypsies). In the 1980s the group released their first audio cassette containing their novelty hit "Kurumitto" ("Dwarfs"), which is a cover version of Dutch musician Father Abraham's "The Smurf Song". With the arrival of CDs in Sri Lanka, they released their first CD Gypsies Gold containing 17 songs and following its success there, with two other CDs, Dance With the Gypsies and Singyore, both well received as well. The group has since released other CDs and continues to enjoy success. Sunil Perera and the Gypsies are world famous for their Sri Lankan baila music. The Gypsies have also successfully collaborated with other Sri Lankan stars like Desmond de Silva. They are also credited for having the first ever biala non stop medly. They are known for their hit song "I Don't Know Why" as well.
Their first performance out of Sri Lanka, as the resident band at the Delhi Taj for three months, was followed by successful tours in foreign countries where many Sri Lankans now reside, such as the UK, Singapore, U.S., New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
They are a highly paid band in Sri Lanka, since they constantly perform at parties, dances and perform at many sold-out concerts.
The long standing female vocalist of the group, Coreen Almeida, and Sharon Nesaduray, better known as "Lulu", have left the group. Radhika Rajavellu is the latest addition to the band after the departure of their well known female vocalist Ginger (Judith White).

H.R. Jothipala
MIDI Songs For H.R. Jothipala
Jothipala was born the first child of a middle-class family from Southern Sri Lanka. He attended St. Lawrence College in Maradana and St. John’s College in Dematagoda. Jothipala would visit tea kiosks during this period to hear music as his family didn't own a radio.
Jothipala made his debut as a playback singer on Cyril P. Abeyratne's Surathalee singing, "Siriyame Sara," in 1956. Prior to this he had recorded a song for the late Sirisena Wimalaweera's Podi Putha. This song didn't make the final cut, as the Indian film composer on the film didn't consider Jothipala's voice good enough.
Jothi has said that he contemplated taking his life when he went with his friends to watch Podi Putha and found out that his song was not included. Later when Surathalee producer Jabir A. Cader wanted to hear one of his songs to consider him for the film, Jothipala almost passed on the offer as he did not possess enough money to create a record. He was helped out by veteran musician Stanley Omar who financed him for the sum of 35 rupees – a large amount of money at the time. Jothipala's song on the film, "Siriyame Sara," still remains popular in Sri Lanka, having recorded the popular number under the direction of T.R. Papa at Wahini Studio in India.
Jothipala has worked with many reputed directors of Sri Lanka. In the early stages of his prolific career, Jothipala got the chance to work with prolific film maker, Lester James Peries on the movie Sandeshaya. Jothipala sang the song "Puruthugeesikara" for the film, which was composed by the legendary Sunil Santha and written by veteran lyricist Arisen Ahubudu.

Charitha Priyadharshani
MIDI Songs For Charitha Priyadharshani
Edward Jayakody married singer Charitha Priyadarshani in 1991, and has a son Chandeepa Sharanath and a daughter Sharanya .
"I'm Charitha Priyadarshini Peiris," she laughs. "And I was born on October 19 in 1967;" she has no intention of hiding her age. "I'm getting grey. But I'm not worried. It's a sign of maturity," she says. But I (the writer) personally feels she still leads. "No...no... both Edward and I lead a very normal, simple and down-to-earth life," she smiles.
Charitha still lives at her birth place at Mirihana, Nugegoda adjoining the Mirihana Police Grounds, which is the ancestral home of her mother Pushpa Wijeratne. "My mother died in 2001 after a brief illness. It's a great void," she sighs. Charitha's father, Ariyadasa Peiris was also one time a famous radio artiste who had introduced many young, up and coming singers to the nation. And Edward Jayakody was also one such young singer who stepped into the field through these programmes.
Charitha is the youngest of the family. Her sister, Malika was never interested in stepping into the field of arts. Nor did their father Ariyadasa like the idea when Charitha showed interest in becoming an announcer.
But even when she was at school at Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda, not a single school ceremony passed without it been compered by Charitha. "Hmm... school days were fabulous. Our class was one of the best classes in the grade comprising nine senior prefects and students with aesthetic talent.
Even Deepika Priyadarshani Peiris who has been among the top singers in Sri Lanka was also in our class. Ours was a very united class. Even if we saw somebody in a bad mood, we would crack a joke to make her smile. I studied Kandyan dancing under Mrs. Daya Nellampitiya and Christine Dissanayake at school. But I took part in musical programmes through out. I was in the Eastern band and played almost all the instruments. I did guiding and netball..hmm.. that's all," she says.
"The biggest mistake I did in my life was deciding to do Bio science for my A/Ls. My father wanted me to become a doctor and never liked me stepping into the field of art. But since 1984, I have been getting involved with programmes the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
It was my father's younger brother, Jayantha Peiris who gave me a helping hand to enter SLBC. And my mother was also with me through out encouraging me. So after A/Ls I joined SLBC full time. 'Sonduru Sevena' in 1985, was my first programme.
I lent a voice cut for. It was a live programme. I became a Relief Announcer in 1994, a News Reader in 1995 and then a Drama Artiste after a few years. I studied music under Edward and then under late Victor B. Perera and passed the SLBC test as a 'Grade A' singer as well," she reminisces.
Charitha has been conducting the lottery programme 'Shanida Vaasanava' for the Development Lotteries Board and has been at ITN for the past 21 years. "When I started it I was just 19 years old. Apart from that I presented 'Kala Rasanga', a weekly news in the arts field with Francis Wanniarachchi on ITN. At present I present 'Mathakaye Randunu Gee' on Saturday from 3.00 to 4.00 pm, and 'Eda Api Dutu Chithrapatayakin' on Sunday at 4.30 pm.," she says.
"Dalmalamu Api Eka Iti Pahanak" composed by Pushpa Ramlani and the melody by Charitha was sung by more than 100 popular female singers in Sri Lanka - both young and old on the International Women's Day in 1998. And since then this song is the theme song of the International Women's Day up to day.

Sujatha Aththnayake
MIDI Songs For Sujatha Aththnayake
Sujatha Attanayake, whose voice had been silent for many years, will reawaken her voice in the coming year. The news will definitely arouse the temptation the fans had for her voice. As Attanayake revealed to the Artscope she will host a concert to raise funds for the welfare of war heroes.
"When I sang Yuda Bime Avi Gata my son was in grade six. He later joined the army. I never thought I will have to face the same fate. Now I feel the meaning of the song I voiced long time ago." Sujatha recalled old times.
Dedicating a son for a worthy national cause is dignity to a mother though the suffering of loss will live forever in her heart.
"I went to Pooneryn where my son went on his no-return journey. I visited some camps close by too. Our sons who dedicated their valuable youth to a national cause wait for a good lifestyle. I have a right to talk about them. The progress of welfare programs should accelerate. That's my idea. That's why I'm going to sing for them." Sujatha said.
Speaking of local music education Sujathat opined the conditions are in a sorry state.
"Our education system still doesn't give priority to aesthetic subjects to the extent they deserve. No wonder our young generation is so much confused. If you want to check my logic simply look at most students. They are terrible and they don't think or feel the value of a colleague's life. That's why they assault each other till blood comes out. I am sure they would not stop the assault till they see the blood of the victim. That's the status of schools. The situation within the universities is of course no exception. The principal reason is that they lack opportunities to immerse their minds in aesthetic subjects. They don't know how to sing, how to dance, how to draw or how to play a musical instrument. They are only vulnerable to music which is not music. That's just a hustle and bustle." She explained.
During the 1971 insurgency no student from any music college was killed or abducted on suspicion. This was because people living with music cannot trouble others. Music can bring them sensitivity, virtues and gentleman qualities.
"On the contrary the modern student engages in music or other aesthetic subject, and later has to quit the subject as they come to grade 10. They have to give up music for English Literature. Parents and teachers emphasize on English since the language is a must. But it will be too late when the country fathoms the mistake they did by depriving the students of the opportunity. Since I worked with education sector I know what it lacks the most is people with common sense to work on policies and schedules." Sujatha opined.
Speaking on music programs which save the day for electronic media she expressed her disappointment. "A singer or a musician cannot come to a higher position overnight. It requires much dedication and knowledge. But what these TV channels do is crowning an apprentice with a large number of SMS votes. Crowning is not that necessary. Recognition of a singer with inborn talents is the necessity. Then those people who can sing well but have no sound music knowledge should be given that. Since they are not given with what they need, they come before people as stars overnight and go into oblivion in no time. According to my perspective these reality shows are tomfoolery to the very word."
Music comes in association of virtues. Most budding vocalists have no idea about this aspect. They sing just for money. They want themselves to get marketed. In fact media should be responsible for this negative development, Attanayake said.
"You can see how loathsome those girls, who dance showing off their bodies, are. I was a dancer myself too sometime back. So I can notice the wrong gestures in these dancers. They mislead the ignorant audience."
"I am not an artiste who sings hosannas for anyone," Sujatha stresses, "that's why I can talk in this manner. I have that dignity being an artiste who is true to what I learned."

MIDI Songs For Mohideen Beig
Mohideen Baig (1919–1991) was a popular Sri Lankan musician. He was a Muslim who moved to Sri Lanka from Salem in Tamil Nadu, India.[1] Beg's son, Ishak is also a singer but not that popular in Srilanka like his father was.[2] Baig has dueted with H. R. Jothipala, G.S.B. Rani Perera, Latha Walpola, Sujatha Attanayake and Jamuna Rani among others. He was also the only Sri Lankan to duet with Lata Mangeshkar.
Even though he was not a Buddhist, Baig sang a lot of Buddhist related songs. Because of his nature to support other cultures, he was one of the most influential multicultural/"multi-religious" figures in the Sri Lankan art history.
Baig was born in India and moved to Sri Lanka in 1932. Baig recorded his first song 'Karuna Muhude Namu Gileela' as a duet with K. K. Rajaluckshmi in 1934. He debuted as a playback singer in 1947 on the second Sri Lankan film Ashokamala.
